I have read a book, and will be writing a little review of that… well, I won’t say soon, because it all depends on when I can corral my brain into working for me. It’s like a flock of particularly dopey sheep being herded by a poorly German Shepherd who’s easily distracted by shiny hunting in Pokémon Let’s Go Eevee.
… that analogy may have gotten away from me somewhere.
My point is that I’m not here to write about a book, but about a problem I and many other people currently have: Wellerman Addiction.
Now I’m not on TikTok, but I am on Tumblr because 2020 was terrible enough to send me fleeing back to the comfort zone of my early twenties. And it was on there that some beautiful, blessed soul shared “The Wellerman”.
So you have this guy called Nathan Evans who made a video on TikTok of him singing a sea shanty called “The Wellerman”, which you can find here. This song is pretty bad-ass, but not bad-ass enough for Luke Taylor. This guy – who is nineteen, by the way, and yes, his speaking voice is that deep as well – decided to add a bassline to the song and… well. It sounds incredible.
Even better? Not only has Taylor done extra videos with him adding other voice parts (including tenor, so he is clearly one of those lads like Avi Kaplan or Tim Foust who have enviable vocal ranges), other people have now taken Taylor’s original version and added their voices to it. For example, here is a user called beccaleighz adding a rather lovely soprano to it.
Folks. I cannot stop listening to this. So in the spirit of making everybody as hopelessly enraptured as I am, here’s the video.
Related Post: So. I turn 30 this year.

Edit: OKAY NO SOMEBODY MERGED TOGETHER A BUNCH OF AMAZING VERSIONS OF THIS SONG AND IT IS LITERALLY THE BEST THING EVER.
PEOPLE ARE AMAZING. SORRY I CAN’T LINK THE INDIVIDUAL CONTRIBUTORS THIS TIME, THERE’S TOO MANY, BUT OH MY LORD THIS IS BEAUTIFUL.
